Detail Design Update – Access between Parkdale Avenue & Westmount Avenue

A detail design update is proposed regarding the intersection of Parkdale Avenue and Westmount Avenue, in response to comments received at the Public Information Centre (PIC) held at the Hintonburg Community Centre on Wednesday, April 3, 2013.

The Recommended Plan for the Parkdale Avenue interchange improvements that was presented at the PIC realigned the westbound off-ramp at Parkdale to the south, and separated the off-ramp from Westmount Avenue by a new noise barrier. According to this plan, vehicles were able to turn right from Westmount on to Parkdale.

In order to address public concerns for pedestrian safety at this location, the Ministry is recommending that direct vehicular access between Parkdale Avenue and Westmount Avenue be eliminated. This requires Westmount Avenue to be converted from a one-way street to a cul-de-sac with two-way traffic, as illustrated on the conceptual design drawings accessible via the following links:

With this proposal, north-south crossing distances will be minimized as pedestrians on the east side of Parkdale Avenue will only be required to cross 2 lanes of traffic at the westbound off-ramp terminal. The existing east-west crosswalk on the north side of Westmount will be moved to the south to align better with the new ramp location. Local traffic on Westmount Avenue will access Parkdale Avenue via Beverley and Gladstone Avenues.

The Ministry encourages you to provide any questions, comments or concerns that you may have regarding this design refinement by Friday, November 29, 2013. To do so, please visit the Contact Us page of this website.
